Diabetic Retinopathy Program Saves Sight

February 20, 2015

Eastern Plumas Health Care has worked hard to get its Diabetic Retinopathy Screening program up and running. Last month, Dr. Harry Green of UC Berkeley’s School of Optometry, made the nine hour round trip from Berkeley to train four EPHC employees to take the photos that are central to a quality digital retinopathy screening program. Now, both Christina Potter, FNP, and Nicole Tuccori, MA, have received their Certification through Berkeley’s EyePACS (Eye Picture Communication System) program to begin screening Plumas County’s diabetic patients. Potter will also perform the brief exam and eye dilation that are a part of the screening...

“EPHC Gives Back,” which began as an idea by a several EPHC employees to create a group that would give back to the community it serves, received a big boost when one EPHC Gives Back member attended an informal dinner this past October. Talk turned to Portola and the struggle many residents have to make ends meet and to provide their children what they need to be successful in school. One woman, who was retiring, said she wanted to do something to “help the children.” When asked how she would like to help, she said, “Would a check for $10,000...

EPHC secured the fourth spot out of 800 rural healthcare telemedicine clinics statewide. Hospital officials say they’re excited about the ranking, and plan to up that already high standard in the future. “My goal for next year is to be in the top three,” said Erica Waldeck, EPHC telemedicine coordinator. “But, fourth is pretty good and I’ll take it.” Telemedicine is the use of video, email, telephone, or other telecommunication systems to transmit clinical consultations between a doctor and patient. This gives physicians easier access to rural patients and their health data. “EPHC's...

C-ing Is Believing

October 17, 2014

Eastern Plumas Health Care is the proud owner of a new C-arm digital x-ray system, and no one is happier about this than the hospital’s Cardiologist, Dr. Milind Dhond. The C-arm utilizes fluoroscopy, a process in which dye is injected into veins or arteries and continuous x-rays are taken “in real time.” Imagine a digital video rather than a digital photograph, which then allows Dhond to watch as blood flows through an artery or vein. According to Dhond, “This is a high quality C-arm, and it utilizes digital subtraction,” meaning the background can be removed,...

EPHC’s Preventive Health Screenings Save Lives!

August 19, 2014

Bill Adamson, the poster boy for preventive health screenings, came to the Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm screening day at Eastern Plumas Health Care, only to find out he has a small aneurysm. Because he caught it early, he’ll be able to monitor it through yearly screenings, and have a manageable treatment plan if it increases in size later on. An AAA, if it becomes very large, is like an old bicycle tire with a balloon at a weak point. If it bursts, it is lethal. Said Adamson, “My mother lived to age 97, and there’s longevity on my father’s side—I have...
